Page 5 of 17 ![]()
Model designed entirely in-house by Rich, Dave and John.
| HMS
Surprise
(1:64) |
| The stern counter, planked athwartships with walnut. |
| Viewed from above, the stern counter is slightly oversized and will be trimmed back flush to the stern fascia when fitted. |
| The first plank of the second planking is positioned with its lower edge flush to the lower edge of the main gunport pattern. These planks have been temporarily positioned for illustration purposes only. |
As a result of planking the stern counter, a pronounced step is formed between the counter planking and the first hull planking. This step results in a perfect flush termination point for the second hull planking. |
The first plank of the second planking runs vertically past the stern counter planking while the second and remaining lower planks run flush into the stern counter planking. |
The stern fascia fitted across the stern extensions. Notice the striking flared wing shape. |
| Notice that the ship's side intersects the outboard stern windows, this is correct as can be seen from the Admiralty Plans, and illustrates that on rare occasions the 'look' of the ship was more important than function. |
