| The plank termination patterns. Note, because the upper end of these patterns will be visible on the completed model they are constructed from walnut. These patterns are also pre-profiled to allow the bowsprit to pass through between them. |
As a captured French prize, Surprise has several features typical of the French designed ships of this period such as the large and obviously visible tumblehome. Note, the forecastle gunport pattern is shown here for illustration only, it is not to be permanently fitted until the quarterdeck is in place. |
Due to the large tumblehome it is vital to pin the gunport patterns securely against the bulkhead uprights while the glue is hardening. Brass flat headed pins are provided in the kit for this purpose. |
| The first plank, of the first planking is fitted tight against the underside of the main gunport pattern. This first plank is vertical from the bows back to bulkhead 14. At bulkhead 14 the plank begins to turn in and finally terminates, horizontally, against the underside of bulkhead 16 but still tight against the gunport pattern. |
| The first planking as viewed at the transom. Note that the first seven planks terminate horizontally against the underside of bulkhead 16; the eighth plank onwards terminate vertically against the after end of the keel. |
