The Naval History of Great Britain Vol. 3 (1800 to 1805)

The Naval History of Great Britain During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars William Jamesí Naval History is one of the most valuable works in the English language on the operation of the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The original five volumes were published in 1822-24, with a six-volume edition appearing in 1826. Previously the work has only been available to scholars through specialist libraries. This new edition, with each individual volume indexed separately for the first time, provides an accessible, affordable edition of this important work.

The third volume covers the vital years from 1800 until 1805. 1801 witnessed Nelson's most controversial victory over the Danish fleet at Copenhagen where he famously ignored his superior officer's signal to break off the action. The year also saw the famous capture of the Gamo by Lord Cochrane's H.M.S. Speedy. With the peace of Amiens lasting from 1802-1803, the narrative continues to the anti-French invasion measures of 1804, when Nelson was appointed Commander of the naval forces in the English Channel. The volume concludes with the year 1805 and the beginning of the Trafalgar campaign.
